About Romulo Barral

Voted by Tatame magazine as the #1 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt in the World for 2007, Romulo Barral is considered one of the top Grappling Competitors in the world.

Romulo is a 2-time Brazilian Cup Champion, 4-time Brazilian Champion, 2-time World Cup Champion, 5-time Pan American Champion and a 5-time World Champion. Further, he’s done all of this in a relatively short amount of time, having first discovered Jiu-Jitsu at the age of 15 when he saw his first Victor Belfort fight.

Raised in a small town in Brazil in a house with red dirt floors, Romulo Barral had initially excelled in Taekwondo before seeing his first Gracie Family Challenge. Intent on learning more, Barral moved to Brazil’s largest city, Belo Horizonte, and began training in earnest under the Gracie banner.

As he traveled to international events, his path eventually crossed with Alberto Crane’s and he was invited as a guest instructor to the Santa Fe academy on several occasions. When Alberto decided to sell the Academy there in order to move to L.A. for family reasons, Romulo moved from England to L.A. to train and partner with Crane in the new Legacy Mixed Martial Arts studio. Romulo looks forward to making a difference in the lives of Legacy students through his example of focused respect and discipline.
